  THE GOD THAT SEPARATES

By Dr. Tony Smart

Genesis 1:4

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

We serve a God who distinguishes truth from fallacy, righteousness from unrighteousness, light from darkness, good from evil. This separates God from the impersonal mystical "force" that some serve that has good and evil as two sides of the same power. God distinguishes between holiness and unholiness because HE is holy and HE wants us to live holy lives (1Peter 1:15-16).

Proverbs 4:19

The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

Wherever there is absence of God’s righteousness there will darkness. This darkness is not physical absence of light, but rather the absence of spiritual light. It is the result of not having a spiritual relationship with God.

One of the problems in today’s culture is the attempt by some to redefine darkness as if it were light; wrong as if it were right. Note what the prophet Isaiah stated in Isaiah 5:20:

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

"Woe" is an expression of sadness or shame because of the practice of defining evil things as though they were good things. A modern day example of this would be "same sex marriage." The practice is a blatant disregard of God’s Law and nature’s laws. Nevertheless, there are some that would seek to include it into society as an "alternative lifestyle." But if we already have marriage defined as a heterosexual legal and moral union between a man and a woman and God defined this as being very good (Genesis 1:31), why do we need to pervert the definition of marriage? The truth is we don’t have to do any such thing. We who know the God who separates truth from error and light from darkness need not change our truth into a lie to please a fallen culture that is walking in darkness.

The light of the world is Jesus (John 8:12) those that follow HIM wish to be taught and led righteously. Those that seek a new definition that obscures the light and blur the truth have an evil agenda and are separated from the light and are stumbling in darkness. There is no need to follow them. When you follow Jesus you separate from the darkness that seeks to oppress the true and right work that identifies you as a child of God. The only dark area in a Christian’s life is the place where Christ is not ruling.
