SENATE
DEBATES FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT
On June 6,
the Senate is scheduled to begin debate on
the Federal Marriage Amendment. The
FMA is intended to constitutionally define
marriage in America as between one man and
one woman.
This
Constitutional amendment is necessary
because of court decisions upholding the
right of same-sex couples to marry, even in
states which have previously enacted
Defense of Marriage Acts (DOMAs) or have
attempted to amend their own state
constitutions to preserve traditional
marriage.
This will be
an important debate! Christians should
consider contacting the two Senators from
their state to tell them how they feel about
this important Constitutional Amendment.
Senators may be contacted in their
Washington, D.C. offices, however, citizen
comments are sometimes taken more seriously
when the call is made to the Senator's local
office.
Many
political commentators believe the Senate is
bringing up the FMA issue only to
appease their conservative Christian base in
an election year, but that they have no
intention of ever actually passing it. An
Amendment has to pass by a super majority
vote so Democrats as well as Republicans
will have to support it. If passed, the
Amendment would go to the states and 3/4 of
them would have to ratify it to add it to
the Constitution.
